Sam Altman’s World Hits 10M Human Verifications Globally

World, previously known as Worldcoin, has achieved a significant milestone by verifying over 10 million users worldwide. Launched in 2023 and backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the blockchain-based project focuses on distinguishing human users from AI systems.

The project employs small devices called orbs to scan users’ eyeballs, ensuring their identity as humans. Participants receive WLD tokens as a reward for their verification.

With the rise of artificial intelligence, World aims to create a robust system to prove human identity in a digital landscape increasingly dominated by AI-powered agents.

In addition to the 10 million verified users, the World App has been downloaded more than 20 million times, reflecting its widespread adoption. Brazil, with its large population and favorable attitude toward cryptocurrencies, has been a key market for the world.

The project’s expansion to Brazil in 2024 has contributed significantly to its growth. Currently, World operates in over 160 countries, showcasing its global appeal and relevance.

Despite its achievements, the world has faced challenges, particularly regarding data privacy concerns. Last year, a German regulator ordered the deletion of biometric data collected during the verification process.

However, World responded by emphasizing that its current processes had been updated in 2024, and the issues raised pertained to outdated operations. The project has been actively working to align with regulatory standards as it continues its expansion efforts.

Tools for Humanity, led by CEO and co-founder Alex Blania, is the main team behind World. The project’s ethos highlights the importance of proving human identity as AI technology advances.
