Bitcoin Surges Past $81K Amid Rate Hike and Clarity Act Stall

Bitcoin Magazine

Bitcoin’s market value climbed past $81,000 on Friday, defying a turbulent week marked by regulatory hurdles and macroeconomic headwinds.

The leading cryptocurrency recently traded at $80,982, following a peak of $81,055 earlier Friday morning in New York. This represents a nearly 6% gain over the preceding 24 hours.

This upward movement arrives immediately after lawmakers stalled anticipated crypto legislation—known as the Clarity Act—on Tuesday, followed by an interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday.

Prominent figures in the digital asset sector had long demanded regulatory clarity, a goal addressed by the Clarity Act, which sought to split oversight responsibilities among regulators. However, a procedural vote by lawmakers halted the landmark market structure bill.

Concurrently, the Federal Reserve raised borrowing costs for the first time in response to surging U.S. inflation. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that maintaining price stability remains the central bank’s primary objective.

“The plain fact is that inflation is too high, and has been for too long,” Warsh stated. “This summer’s inflation readings do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved.”

Historically, Bitcoin has thrived in low-interest-rate environments, which typically provide increased market liquidity for trading digital assets.

Although Bitcoin’s price experienced an initial drop following the news of the blocked Clarity Act and the Fed’s policy shift, it rebounded sharply on Friday.

Data from Farside Investors shows that U.S. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded net negative flows earlier in the week, with investors withdrawing roughly $427 million from these products.

By Thursday, fund flows shifted back into positive territory as investors poured nearly $160 million into the funds, breaking a two-day streak of outflows.

In a Thursday research note, asset manager Grayscale stated it does not anticipate the Fed’s rate decision to harm Bitcoin’s price, characterizing the action as a mid-cycle adjustment rather than a structural cycle change.

Furthermore, despite the legislative setback surrounding the Clarity Act, regulatory bodies such as the SEC continue advancing pro-crypto regulations.
