WhiteBIT adds Lightning Network to speed up Bitcoin transfers

The Lightning Network is continuing to expand its practical applications.

Cryptocurrency exchange WhiteBIT announced on Thursday that it has integrated the network to enable users to transfer funds with greater speed and efficiency.

The Swiss exchange, utilizing infrastructure provided by BTC platform Voltage, stated that users can now execute bitcoin deposits and withdrawals via the network. Several prominent exchanges, such as Coinbase and Kraken, have incorporated this layer-two solution over the past few years.

“WhiteBIT’s mission is to make blockchain technology accessible and widely adopted by delivering practical, user-friendly solutions for digital assets,” WhiteBIT Founder and CEO Volodymyr Nosov said in a statement.

“Adding Lightning support brings us closer to this goal as we are making Bitcoin faster and more useful for customers who want to top up accounts, send and receive funds, and use Bitcoin across more real-world flows.”

Headquartered in Zug, WhiteBIT ranks as the 17th largest exchange by trading volume based on CoinGecko data. The platform noted that this rollout provides a faster Bitcoin rail suited for “remittances, exchange funding, merchant-style QR payments, and interoperability with Lightning-enabled wallets and applications.”

Throughout this year, transaction volumes on the Lightning Network have experienced significant growth. This increase is primarily driven by exchanges adopting the network for funds transfers due to its speed and cost-effectiveness.

Initially released in 2018, the Lightning Network was traditionally promoted for microtransactions, including tipping or purchasing everyday items like coffee.

Furthermore, the network provides enhanced privacy compared to the main Bitcoin blockchain. Because transactions are settled off-chain instead of being logged publicly, individual payments present a greater challenge to trace.
