According to recent reports, Germany’s largest multinational lender, Deutsche Bank, is on the verge of launching its cryptocurrency custody service within the coming weeks.
A Friday Reuters report, citing the bank’s corporate banking chief, also revealed that the institution intends to extend the custody platform into the Asian market next year.
This move aligns with a broader industry trend as major global banks introduce or prepare digital asset custody offerings. Over the past 18 months, institutions such as BNY Mellon, State Street, Standard Chartered, U.S. Bank, and Citigroup have all committed to direct crypto custody.
Deutsche Bank initially disclosed its intention to roll out a bitcoin custody solution for corporate and institutional clients in Europe back in September, noting at the time that the rollout depended on clearing the necessary regulatory milestones.
The Friday report further noted that the platform will initially focus on safeguarding major digital currencies like bitcoin before branching into features that assist clients in transferring funds into and out of stablecoins.
Corporate bank co-head Gerald Podobnik told Reuters that the financial industry will be required to “offer tokenized or blockchain solutions.”
In recent years, several prominent banks have begun leveraging blockchain technology—the foundation of bitcoin—for their proprietary products.
Tokenization and stablecoins have emerged as major points of discussion as legacy financial institutions look to speed up specific operations.
For many banks entering the digital asset arena, crypto custody serves as the entry point. Back in 2022, BNY Mellon made history by becoming the first major American bank to roll out digital asset custody services.
Additionally, financial giants like Citi and Standard Chartered have either launched or announced plans for bitcoin custody services globally over the past year.
