Does US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Own Bitcoin? His Financial Records Offer Clues

U.S. Secretary of Defense Peter Hegseth maintains a larger cash reserve than his holdings in bitcoin, according to his newly published 2025 annual financial disclosure.

The document reveals that Hegseth owns between $16,000 and $65,000 worth of the leading cryptocurrency, contrasted with $1 million held in a cash bank account.

Having taken office as Defense Secretary in January 2025, Hegseth serves within the most cryptocurrency-friendly administration in U.S. history.

President Donald Trump received backing from digital asset industry leaders and recently advocated for the passage of the Clarity Act, a major piece of crypto legislation, last month.

The filing with the Office of Government Ethics additionally indicates that Hegseth and his wife possess retirement accounts holding investments valued between approximately $2.05 million and $4.35 million.

Among their portfolio assets are exchange-traded funds such as the technology-focused Invesco QQQ Trust, alongside the Apollo Diversified Real Estate Fund, which is a closed-end fund.

Hegseth’s recorded transactions feature the sale of shares in companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple.

According to the disclosure, Hegseth stores his bitcoin holdings within a Coinbase wallet.

These cryptocurrency assets are relatively modest when compared to the holdings of the Trump family, whose members have generated billions through digital asset projects since the president assumed office.

President Trump disclosed personally that he earned more than $1.4 billion from family digital asset enterprises, positioning cryptocurrency as his primary source of income well ahead of real estate and legal settlements.

An investigative report published by Reuters earlier this year revealed that the family—including sons Eric and Donald Jr.—accumulated $2.3 billion across four crypto projects through the end of April 2026.

Democratic lawmakers and other critics have alleged that Trump is financially benefiting from the cryptocurrency sector while simultaneously formulating related government policy. The White House has consistently rejected accusations of conflicts of interest, while Trump has drawn attention to congressional stock trading—specifically targeting Nancy Pelosi—and advocated for a ban on the practice.
