Ethical Hackers Transfer $4.5M in Bitcoin to Recovery Trust

Ethical hackers have transferred bitcoin from compromised Coldcard signing devices into a trust so that impacted victims can recover their assets, according to Alex Thorn of Galaxy Digital.

In a Monday post on X, Thorn explained that these white hats seized the funds to safeguard prospective victims. The assets now reside in an address managed by the Crypto Recovery Trust, a Wyoming-based trust established to assist ethical hackers in restoring funds to their owners.

A grand total of 52.37 bitcoins—valued at over $4.5 million at current market prices—were relocated. Thorn noted that these rescued funds account for 2.8% of the total Coldcard exploit.

Malicious actors began draining bitcoin held on Coinkite’s widely used Coldcard hardware wallet on July 31.

Coinkite, a Canadian firm, explained that a firmware flaw in the Coldcard units caused seed generation to default to a weak software Pseudorandom Number Generator rather than the hardware’s true random number generator. This vulnerability enabled hackers to effectively guess investor seed phrases.

Monitoring the flow of capital, Galaxy Digital reported that 1,789.28 bitcoins vanished in the breaches, representing $154.1 million in bitcoin based on current values.

Earlier this month, Nick Bax from the universal market protocol Ump Labs disclosed his participation in the fund recovery effort.

“Finally able to say that at the end of July, I was involved in the rescue of ~50 BTC which were “imminently going to be stolen due to the COLDCARD entropy flaw,” Bax shared on X.

He further noted: “The funds are currently held by a Wyoming trust, which will ensure that funds are returned to their rightful owners.”

In the wake of the attacks, prudent investors have transferred their coins to alternative storage options, including cryptocurrency exchanges.

Coinkite stated that the software bug “silently went unnoticed” and that “its potential impact grew with every release” of their merchandise.

Shortly after the initial breach, the business advised investors to upgrade their software or transfer their balances away from the popular hardware wallet.
