Meanwhile secures $37.5M to help wealthy families inherit Bitcoin

Meanwhile, the pioneering life insurer operating exclusively in Bitcoin, has secured $37.5 million in a fresh funding round backed by its existing investors, according to an announcement from the firm.

Leading the investment was Bain Capital Crypto, with additional contributions from Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. This latest capital infusion elevates Meanwhile’s cumulative funding beyond $180 million. Other notable backers include Sam Altman.

The enterprise explained that this financial boost comes on the heels of a sharp increase in interest for its Bitcoin-based life insurance offerings outside the United States—specifically across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East—against a backdrop of widespread macroeconomic uncertainty.

“Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on,” stated Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Meanwhile.

“Brokers came to us because their clients kept asking. This round lets us keep up with them.”

During the early part of 2026, Meanwhile introduced BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy tailored for high-net-worth international clients. This offering serves as the firm’s second product category, following the rollout of BTC 10-Pay, which was built specifically for United States taxpayers.

Through the BTC Life 1-Pay product, policyholders pay a single premium using Bitcoin in exchange for a guaranteed lifetime death benefit paid out in Bitcoin. The underlying value of the policy appreciates in BTC, and following the conclusion of the first year, owners are permitted to borrow up to 90% of that value free of any mandatory repayment timelines or margin calls.

These policies can be held directly by individuals, corporate entities, or trusts, rendering them highly applicable to comprehensive succession and estate planning strategies, according to the firm.

Since the rollout, Meanwhile has secured agreements with 15 brokerage firms catering to affluent households throughout regions such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Switzerland, and the UAE. Among these collaborators are Apeiron Group, an upscale life insurance marketplace, and Lioner, a family office, trust, and insurance provider with presences in Zurich, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

“We’re reaching a turning point where more high-net-worth clients are asking not just how to hold Bitcoin and digital assets, but how to plan around them and ultimately transfer that wealth to the next generation,” noted Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group.

Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting revenue has already surpassed the total figures from the previous year and is pacing to more than double throughout 2026, though specific financial metrics were withheld.

“Meanwhile owns every layer of a regulated life insurer and builds it like an AI-enabled startup,” remarked Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto. “The growth this year proves the model, and we’re glad to back them again.”

The operational division of the business, designated as Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, holds the inaugural Class IILT designation issued by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. This regulatory approval was attained in July 2024 following a two-year operational tenure inside the regulatory sandbox.

The insurer maintains its financial reserves, balance sheet, and audited statements entirely in Bitcoin. Furthermore, the digital assets belonging to policyholders are safeguarded by licensed institutional custodians.
