Citigroup has joined forces with Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, for a new blockchain initiative.
In a joint statement released on Monday, the two organizations announced their partnership to enable Citi customers to transition smoothly between traditional fiat currency and stablecoins, removing the burden of developing and managing separate banking and cryptocurrency architectures.
This development arrives as financial institutions across the globe leverage the foundational technology of Bitcoin to accelerate operations and serve clients interested in digital assets.
Last month, Citi announced plans to roll out a framework later this year allowing institutional investors to custody conventional assets and Bitcoin under a single system instead of relying on fragmented infrastructure.
“Our clients operate in an increasingly fast-paced and complex global economy, and we’re focused on delivering the solutions they need,” stated Debopama Sen, Head of Payments and Services at Citi.
“Our goal is to build the next generation of payments infrastructure — one that is seamless, interoperable, and operates across both traditional and digital payments instruments and networks.”
According to the announcement, the agreement consists of two main components. First, Coinbase Virtual Accounts—powered by Citi’s banking-as-a-service platform—will grant Coinbase payment users bank-like capabilities to receive, store, and transmit funds. Citi will supply the regulated banking foundation that allows incoming fiat currency to undergo automatic stablecoin conversion.
Second, Citi’s merchant platform, known as Spring by Citi, will integrate Coinbase’s infrastructure to permit enterprise clients to accept stablecoin payments during checkout. Coinbase handles the conversion of stablecoins back into fiat, while Citi executes the fund settlement, ensuring merchants are never required to directly hold or handle cryptocurrency.
Alec Lovett, Head of Infrastructure Product at Coinbase, remarked, “Fintechs building on Coinbase have always needed a fast, compliant bridge between fiat and stablecoins, and Citi gives us that at scale.”
The initial collaboration between Coinbase and Citi to improve digital asset payment options for institutional customers was first revealed last year.
Citi maintains several blockchain-based products, such as Citi Token Services, which facilitates real-time cross-border transactions through tokenized deposits.
Furthermore, the bank has collaborated with other leading financial institutions since last year—including Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and Deutsche Bank—to investigate the potential creation of a stablecoin product.
