UK Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey has seemingly criticized Reform Party leader Nigel Farage’s utilization of Bitcoin.
During a speech on Monday, the finance minister described the pro-crypto member of parliament as being “Liz Truss with a Bitcoin account.”
Farage, who heads the rising Reform Party, has faced recent scrutiny for accepting donations from cryptocurrency entrepreneurs. Liz Truss served as the United Kingdom’s briefest prime minister and faced widespread backlash over her debt-financed 2022 mini-budget.
“Nigel Farage — he wants you to think he’s a man of the people,” Healey stated. “But when it comes to the economy, he’s Lizz Truss with a Bitcoin account.”
Healey added that the governing Labour Party aims to help the UK advance “through fiscal discipline, through good work, through strong industries.”
His remarks drew criticism on X from members of the Bitcoin community, who questioned the existence of a “Bitcoin account.”
“Apparently ‘Bitcoin account’ is now a thing,” the Simply Bitcoin account posted on X. “Incredible stuff from one of the people running Britain.”
The populist politician Farage has a long-standing history as a pro-crypto advocate. Since 2020, he has largely presented Bitcoin as an issue of personal liberty and resistance against government control over currency.
Additionally, Farage has stated that being debanked by the private British financial institution Coutts inspired his growing curiosity regarding digital assets.
As recently as last year, he announced at the Bitcoin 2025 Conference in Las Vegas that, if elected prime minister, he would reduce crypto capital gains taxes and mandate that the Bank of England create a Bitcoin reserve.
This year, Farage has faced criticism for accepting millions of dollars in cryptocurrency donations from tech entrepreneur and Tether investor Christopher Harborne, along with Ben Delo, co-founder of the shuttered BitMEX crypto exchange.
The Metropolitan Police have launched an inquiry into allegations that the Reform Party violated regulations concerning overseas contributions. The party denies any wrongdoing and asserts it will cooperate with authorities.
