On Wednesday, Deutsche Bank announced plans to launch a bitcoin custody service for institutional and corporate clients in Europe before the end of the year.
The German multinational noted that the upcoming rollout remains dependent on meeting the necessary regulatory timeline.
This move by Deutsche Bank aligns with a broader industry trend of major global banks rolling out cryptocurrency custody offerings. Over the past year and a half, institutions such as BNY Mellon, State Street, Standard Chartered, U.S. Bank, and Citigroup have either introduced or pledged support for direct crypto custody.
“Digital assets are not a replacement for the traditional financial system but an important complement to it,” stated Gerald Podobnik, Co-Head of the Corporate Bank at Deutsche Bank.
Podobnik added, “We see them as new rails that can coexist with existing market infrastructures while benefiting from the trust, security and safeguards that regulated financial institutions provide. Our aim is to offer clients a secure and regulated gateway to this evolving market. The service will be further developed in line with client demand, regulatory requirements and the bank’s risk appetite.”
As Germany’s largest lender, the bank also mentioned it will support a broader “selected range of digital assets” beyond bitcoin, which will include stablecoins.
“The range of supported assets may be expanded over time, subject to client demand and the bank’s product-approval, risk management and regulatory processes,” the statement explained. “Tokenized financial instruments are also included in the roadmap.”
Reports initially surfaced in 2025 that the banking giant was developing bitcoin custody services. According to those reports, the German institution integrated Bitpanda’s custody infrastructure and collaborated with Taurus to construct the corporate and institutional solution.
Similarly, Citi announced just last month that it will launch a bitcoin custody service this year, giving institutional investors the ability to hold both traditional assets and bitcoin within a single framework instead of relying on separate systems.
