Bitcoin Defies Seasonal Slump With Third-Best August on Record

Bitcoin Magazine

While bitcoin is traditionally recognized for its summer slumps, this past August proved to be an exception.

As a matter of fact, the premier cryptocurrency experienced its third-strongest August on record.

André Dragosch, European Head of Research at Bitwise, pointed out on Tuesday that bitcoin generated 25% in returns throughout the month.

“No ‘summer lull’ so far,” Dragosch shared on X, noting that the only months of August with higher returns were 2017—which yielded nearly 66% for investors—and 2013, which achieved close to 31%.

Various analyses indicate that the period spanning from June to September typically displays lower average returns compared to the rest of the year.

Throughout the majority of June and July, bitcoin exhibited notably subdued volatility, consistently changing hands below $65,000.

However, market conditions shifted by mid-August after the U.S. Treasury Department announced plans to more than double its government debt buybacks due to mounting stress in fixed-income markets and yields surging to levels unseen in nearly 20 years.

Declining long-term yields diminish the opportunity cost associated with holding non-yielding assets like gold and bitcoin, which generally bolsters risk-on market sentiment.

Consequently, capital poured into bitcoin as investors reacted to the shift.

Favorable developments arrived shortly after, with President Donald Trump urging lawmakers to pass the long-awaited crypto Clarity Act. The digital asset sector has long advocated for transparent regulations concerning how authorities should govern bitcoin, stablecoins, and alternative cryptocurrencies.

Despite a delay in voting on the legislation, Trump characterized the draft as “very powerful.” The president delivered these remarks following discussions with prominent crypto executives and industry leaders.

During August, investors also gravitated back toward exchange-traded funds (ETFs), injecting over $2.8 billion into these products—marking the highest influx since October, when the cryptocurrency reached a new all-time high.

Overall, bitcoin experienced its best August performance in three years and has climbed by nearly 20% over the past month.

The cryptocurrency surged as high as $81,281 last week before pulling back during Friday’s trading session.

Recently, bitcoin was valued at $76,883, reflecting a decrease of roughly 3% over a 24-hour window.
