Bitcoin Surges Past $86,000 Despite Clarity Act Setback

Bitcoin Magazine

Despite the recent failure of long-awaited crypto legislation last week, Bitcoin buyers remain unfazed.

Six days after lawmakers blocked the Clarity Act, the leading cryptocurrency saw its price jump nearly 7% over a 24-hour period on Monday.

Prominent figures in the digital asset sector have long demanded definitive regulations for the rapidly evolving industry. However, the primary market structure bill designed to establish these rules stalled last week, largely due to Democratic opposition regarding the ethics provisions of the legislation.

Brushing off the collapse of the bill, Bitcoin recently traded at $86,225 after reaching a peak of $86,247 on Monday morning in New York.

The cryptocurrency has posted a 10% gain over the past 30 days. Bitcoin kicked off an extraordinary rally in August — marking its strongest performance in years — following the U.S. Treasury’s announcement that it would at least double the scale of its liquidity-support buyback operations.

Further momentum came when U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a White House summit with digital asset leaders that same week, calling on legislators to pass what he described as the “powerful” Clarity Act.

Although both parties ultimately blocked the bill, pro-crypto lawmakers had spent months accusing Democrats of intentionally delaying it.

The primary disagreement centered on potential conflicts of interest tied to the crypto holdings of the Trump family. Leading up to his return to office, the president and his sons introduced various digital asset ventures, and Trump’s financial disclosures revealed approximately $1.4 billion in crypto-derived income.

The White House maintains that these assets are held in a trust overseen by his children, asserting that no conflict of interest exists.

Ahead of the vote, prominent crypto critic and Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren warned Congress that the proposed legislation “posed a massive risk to families.”

Even though the bill failed to advance, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission are continuing their independent rulemaking efforts.

Following early-week outflows, U.S. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds rebounded with positive net flows later in the week.

Farside Investors data shows that investors poured nearly $593 million into share products managed by BlackRock, Fidelity, and Grayscale on Thursday and Friday.

Additionally, the Federal Reserve implemented an anticipated interest rate hike last week, yet Bitcoin’s price remained completely unaffected by the central bank’s choice, despite historical trends showing strong performance in low-rate environments.
