Grayscale Says Government Debt Sparks Debasement Trade Benefiting Bitcoin

The debasement trade has returned, and according to asset manager Grayscale’s crypto research team, it is poised to benefit bitcoin.

In a research note published this week, the firm stated that the U.S. government devaluing its currency will channel cash directly into digital assets.

“Unchecked government debt growth undermines the credibility of fiat currencies and drives investors to seek out alternative stores of value like physical gold and certain cryptocurrencies,” wrote Zach Pandl, the firm’s head of research, noting that bitcoin would be the primary beneficiary.

The debasement trade occurs when investors purchase assets to hedge against a currency losing value. This strategy gained significant traction last year and fueled bitcoin’s price rally, though momentum stalled after October as traders shifted their focus toward artificial intelligence stocks.

However, bitcoin has recently rebounded following news that the U.S. Treasury plans to at least double its liquidity-support buyback operations. While last week’s announcement negatively impacted the dollar, non-yielding assets have profited from the shift.

“That buybacks are needed at all is the problem: heavy growth in government debt is driving up the cost of borrowing,” the note explained. “The Treasury is treating the symptoms (rising bond yields) because they cannot cure the disease (structural deficits).”

Additionally, the note pointed out that on the exact same day of the buyback announcement last week, the Treasury revealed that total U.S. public debt had surpassed $40 trillion for the first time.

As the burden of debt and interest payments continues to climb, the government faces three choices: raise taxes, slash spending, or issue more debt.

Proponents of bitcoin believe the politically favored route will be expanding the money supply—a move that harms the dollar while ultimately benefiting scarce assets like bitcoin.

Following bitcoin’s surge last week, the U.S. dollar experienced its worst week of August, hitting a three-month low.

By Friday afternoon in New York, bitcoin was changing hands at $77,493 after reaching a weekly high of $81,281. While the cryptocurrency remained flat over a 24-hour window, it has posted gains of over 20% across a 30-day period.
