Lummis Criticizes Democrats Ahead of Clarity Act Vote, Expects Passage

Bitcoin Magazine

Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis has renewed her criticism of Democrats regarding the anticipated crypto Clarity Act.

Taking to X on Tuesday, the pro-crypto politician reacted to a Semafor report indicating that Republican senators believed the bill faced likely failure when the Senate reconvenes next week.

Lawmakers had previously aimed for a critical vote on the long-awaited crypto market structure legislation in August prior to their five-week recess. However, the vote was postponed, and the Senate is now scheduled to vote on the measure next week.

“If this bill fails it won’t be because of ethics, it will be because Democrats didn’t join Republicans in embracing a bipartisan bill that protected consumers, cements America’s leadership in digital assets, and empowered law enforcement to clamp down on illicit finance,” Lummis stated.

She asserted that Democrats continue to “demand changes” that could potentially empower future regulators to “kill the crypto industry.”

“If we can bridge those gaps I’m confident we can pass Clarity, but they require further compromise from Democrats, not the White House,” Lummis added.

Previously, Lummis stated that Democrats would shoulder the blame if the Clarity Act fails. Alongside other pro-crypto legislators, she has targeted politicians whom they suspect of intentionally stalling the legislation.

The Clarity Act creates a regulatory framework to officially divide oversight between regulators, establishing distinctions regarding which digital assets qualify as securities, commodities, or stablecoins.

Although the House of Representatives approved the measure last July, progress slowed this year primarily due to clashes between the banking lobby and crypto companies over paying stablecoin yields to customers.

A fresh draft addressing ethics began circulating in July, proposing a ban on government officials from promoting or profiting from crypto—a practice Democrats have criticized the Trump family for engaging in.

Despite these modifications, several Democrats argued that the bill remains inadequate and have pushed for further amendments.

President Donald Trump has called on lawmakers to finalize the legislation. In August, he emphasized that passing this “very, very powerful legislation” is essential for the U.S. to maintain its position as the “undisputed leader in Bitcoin and crypto.”
