MicroStrategy Repurchases Shares While Passing on Bitcoin

Bitcoin treasury firm Strategy abstained from purchasing bitcoin last week, opting instead to allocate $139 million toward its preferred stock, STRC.

An SEC filing submitted on Monday revealed that the Nasdaq-listed enterprise repurchased 1.42 million shares of STRC preferred stock for approximately $139.3 million over the period from September 8 to September 13.

At current market values, the company maintains its holdings of 845,050 bitcoins valued at $66.2 billion, alongside two distinct cash reserves: $5.1 billion in its USD Reserve and $1.3 billion in USD Cash.

As the foremost corporate owner of bitcoin, Strategy shifted its strategy this year away from its previous pattern of routinely purchasing the primary cryptocurrency, choosing instead to execute stock buybacks and accumulate a cash cushion.

There have even been instances where the corporation liquidated small portions of its BTC holdings, which contrasts with founder and chairman Michael Saylor’s well-known mantra to “never sell your bitcoin.”

Following a 10-week pause, the organization briefly resumed its cryptocurrency acquisitions during the final week of August, acquiring nearly $370 million worth of the leading digital asset.

No additional bitcoin purchases have been made since that time.

On Monday, shares of MSTR traded 3% higher on the Nasdaq. The stock has experienced a decline of more than 75% since reaching an all-time high in November 2024, which occurred one month prior to bitcoin crossing the anticipated $100,000 threshold.

Formerly known as MicroStrategy, Strategy transitioned into an enterprise software firm that began acquiring and storing bitcoin in 2020.

The enterprise initially acquired the digital currency as a hedge against inflation for its shareholders, eventually scaling up purchases significantly to establish itself as a dedicated bitcoin treasury.

Executive leadership has defended the recent cryptocurrency liquidations, with CEO Phong Le asserting that the organization now possesses a “bullet-proof balance sheet.”

During its July quarterly earnings report, Strategy reported a financial loss of $8.22 billion. Nevertheless, Le assured stakeholders that the existing unrealized loss did not present a cause for concern.

“We’re the J.P. Morgan of the crypto economy, so whether we sell 1,000 bitcoin out of 840,000 to me is irrelevant to the conversation,” Le remarked during a later interview.
