Strategy CEO Defends Bitcoin Sale as the ‘Right Trade’

The chief executive of bitcoin treasury firm Strategy has dismissed potential investor worries regarding the company’s recent digital asset sales, emphasizing that the decision was designed to bolster its financial foundation.

During a Tuesday interview with Bloomberg, Phong Le stated that the enterprise now maintains a “bullet-proof balance sheet,” asserting that offloading portions of its bitcoin holdings at the time constituted the “right trade.”

As the foremost corporate owner of bitcoin, Strategy resumed purchasing the digital currency on Monday following a 10-week hiatus. After pausing acquisitions in June, the organization instead disposed of minor portions of its bitcoin holdings to establish a pair of cash reserves.

“We don’t really make decisions specifically on bitcoin’s price,” Le remarked.

He further noted: “We’re a net accumulator, and so I don’t sit around and say, ‘Well, when am I going to sell Bitcoin next?’ It comes down to a bit of a capital management mathematical equation of when we would do it.”

“I don’t foresee us selling bitcoin as we enter into what I consider a pretty heavy bull market.”

Formerly known as MicroStrategy, Strategy is an enterprise software developer that shifted its business model to acquire and hold bitcoin in 2020.

The company initially purchased the cryptocurrency to shield shareholders from inflation, subsequently transforming into a dedicated bitcoin treasury through aggressive accumulation. It currently stands as the biggest corporate holder of the asset, boasting 845,050 bitcoins valued at $65.1 billion based on current market rates.

Market participants can acquire shares of Strategy on the Nasdaq under the ticker MSTR to gain leveraged exposure to bitcoin price movements.

Throughout the current year, Strategy has repurchased portions of its preferred stock, known as STRC, while it trades at a discount, alongside growing its cash buffer.

Reporting its quarterly earnings in July, Strategy revealed a loss of $8.22 billion. Nevertheless, Le maintained that the firm’s ongoing paper losses are currently insignificant, predicting that its equity valuation will rebound strongly next year.

“We’re the J.P. Morgan of the crypto economy, so whether we sell 1,000 Bitcoin out of 840,000 to me is irrelevant to the conversation,” Le explained.

Shares of Strategy, traded on the NASDAQ as MSTR, dipped 2% on Wednesday. The company’s stock has experienced a 22% decline since the beginning of the year.
