Bitcoin’s Moment Has Come for the Far East, Says Metaplanet CEO

Asia is ready for its era of Bitcoin, driven by an evolving regulatory environment, and regional companies and individuals should seize the opportunity.

That was the core message delivered by Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich at the Bitcoin Asia conference. During his Friday address, he detailed how his firm transformed from a struggling enterprise into the world’s third-largest corporate bitcoin treasury.

The Bitcoin Asia event launched on Thursday in Hong Kong, drawing leading figures across the industry to discuss topics ranging from treasury operations to grassroots app development.

“Past market cycles belonged to the West, and the opening Asian cycle is already underway,” Gerovich stated. “The sole question remaining is who will build it. Will you?”

Frequently referred to as Asia’s counterpart to Nasdaq-listed MicroStrategy, Metaplanet shifted its focus away from traditional hotel and technology operations to start accumulating Bitcoin in 2024. Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the company now holds 43,000 bitcoins valued at approximately $3.3 billion based on current market rates.

During his presentation, Gerovich explained that his business was previously small and stagnant until it integrated bitcoin onto its balance sheet, which effectively grants investors regulated equity exposure to the premier cryptocurrency.

He emphasized that this approach represents a massive prospect for Asian corporations, allowing them to capitalize on shifting regulatory frameworks and escalating demand for Bitcoin.

Several Asian jurisdictions, including Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan, are actively updating their regulations to accommodate digital assets.

Gerovich highlighted Japan specifically as a nation characterized by unprecedented levels of domestic savings, capital that can now be deployed productively.

“Holding onto cash has lost its logic, and every Japanese household can sense that shift,” he noted.

“Households in Japan maintain roughly $14 trillion in financial assets. Close to half of that amount remains in bank deposits yielding virtually zero, and that is solely Japan. Include Korea, Southeast Asia, and the wealth managed right here in Hong Kong, and you are examining some of the most substantial reserves of patient capital on the planet.

“For the first time in a generation, these accumulated savings are searching for a destination.”

Gerovich concluded by urging institutions, savers, and companies across Asia to seize prevailing market conditions and construct localized Bitcoin infrastructure.

“The conclusion of cash hoarding and the introduction of new regulatory guidelines are happening simultaneously, combining to create what I view as the single greatest opportunity across Asian markets today,” he concluded.
