South Korea’s Bitcoin ‘Kimchi Premium’ Returns

While bitcoin has posted gains this month, it carries a substantially higher price tag in one specific location: South Korea.

Driven by a fresh wave of retail investors entering the market, the “Kimchi Premium”—which describes instances where bitcoin trades at elevated prices on Korean platforms—has returned. Bloomberg initially broke the story, while figures from CoinGecko indicate that bitcoin trades nearly 1% higher on Upbit, the nation’s premier exchange, than on Binance.

Taking its name from a well-known traditional food in the country, this trend occurs because South Korea’s digital asset market remains partially isolated. Historically, prices climb higher within its borders due to robust domestic retail interest coupled with stringent capital controls and strict trading rules.

Consequently, the Bitcoin/won trading pair sees much higher usage in South Korea than the Bitcoin/U.S. dollar pair does elsewhere. Whenever buying interest rises for the asset, its price naturally spikes higher domestically relative to foreign markets.

Observers view this dynamic as a measure of retail fear of missing out (FOMO), largely because the nation hosts few prominent cryptocurrency funds alongside its restrictive capital controls. Back in 2022, this premium surged as high as 21.5%.

Recently, bitcoin exchanged hands at $78,287, holding steady over the preceding 24 hours. The cryptocurrency sits at the exact value it registered a week prior, though it has climbed 24% over the course of the past month.

The leading digital currency began its sharp upward trajectory shortly after the U.S. Treasury revealed in August that it would at least double its liquidity-support buyback operations. While that announcement weakened the U.S. dollar, non-yielding financial instruments like gold and bitcoin experienced gains.

During that same week, President Donald Trump labeled the long-anticipated crypto Clarity Act a crucial piece of legislation and pressed members of Congress to finalize it.

Prominent figures in the cryptocurrency sector have long demanded transparent guidelines to differentiate whether digital assets function as securities, commodities, or payment stablecoins. News that regulators will soon implement such a structure has historically provided a boost to crypto markets.

At present, speculators on Polymarket calculate a 59% probability that bitcoin will surpass $82,500 within the month, prompting certain analysts to declare a conclusion to the bear market.
